Should we consider the acceptance of microchips in passports to be

the equivalent of pledging allegiance to Antichrist?

I have received letters from Orthodox Christians in Russia, Serbia, and Romania who have read articles by those who refuse to accept passports with microchips. The authors claim that barcodes have the number 666 hidden within them, and those Christians writing to me do not know what to make of this possibility.  I commend these readers for their concern. It is wise and prudent to be vigilant in these ‘end of time’ days, especially in view of the fact that the Prince of Darkness is preparing the peoples of this earth to accept the false messiah. However, as admirable and right as this concern is, it is also prudent not to become obsessed with the number 666.

We were all created in the image of God, with a free will to dream, to choose, and to do what we want. Saints knew the day of their repose, and accepted it with gratitude. We mortals, however, have the tendency to “forget” the words of our prayer “Thy will be done” and attempt to take a pre-emptive action about what we think is a dreadful or frightening future event. For example: If any of us knew that we were going to die in a car at a certain intersection, we would do everything possible to avoid the area or get into a car. God, in His infinite wisdom, knows how much of the future to reveal to us, so as not to disavow the free will He has given us.

We have similarly been told that Antichrist is coming, but we know very little about how he will appear. We, consequently, must learn to trust that God will reveal the Antichrist rather than pretend we have the “secret key” unlocking his identity.

A moment’s reflection makes this obvious. If the Book of Revelation gave us the name of the beast, everyone by that name would be subjected to the accusation of being “antichrist” – but of course Antichrist himself would avoid this name. Herewith lies our pitfall. We fallen human beings are blind to the future but we are bent, nonetheless, on avoiding a horrible future event we think has been predicted in detail in Scripture. Because we do not have a name ‘to cling to’ and on which to hang our fears, some of us have become obsessed with finding that marker we are told was given in Scripture instead of a name, that is, the Antichrist’s signature number. We consider this obsession legitimate, even pious, on the grounds that we are ‘searching in order to avoid’ being deceived by the Antichrist.

As I said, this impulse is good and admirable in an age when we have been warned that “even the elect” may be deceived. But it is not edifying and it will not protect us to become consumed by specific numbers, any more than it would be if we were given a specific name.

Here in the USA there are sects, the Amish for example, that consider electricity to be evil, yet we know that electricity is a natural occurrence that has been given for us to harness and use во славу Божию – to the glory of God. Likewise, the microchip is not evil. Though it is a technological discovery not found in nature as electricity is in lightning, microchips are in use everywhere nowadays, in our phones, cars, debit cards, computers, and ‘barcodes’ are just one of many “codes” used by man.

Again, being vigilant is good, but relying on our individual “smarts” is unwise, even dangerous. As I mentioned in my previous article concerning recognizing the Mark of the Beast (see 4/23/2010), the forerunner and servants of Antichrist are well aware of Revelation, Chapter 13, verse 18. They may use this verse to mock and to mislead Christians by planting ‘secret codes’ – and there may be many such plants and codes to create total confusion, a specialty of Satan. “False Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.” (Mark 13:22)

If we are preoccupied with or live in fear of encoded information and numbers in the form of microchips and bar codes, we show a lack of trust and dependence on God’s guidance. He –as He foretold - will send the prophets Eilias and Enoch to warn the faithful and expose the beast. God will also give us the wisdom when the time comes. It is by His Power that we will “ tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy:  and nothing shall by any means hurt (us)” (Luke 10:19)  - not ours.

Allegiance to the beast will not be something that will be “slipped into a man’s food” without his knowledge. God will not allow us to perish because the truth had remained hidden from us! By falling for the beast’s deception and believing his false promises, the unfortunate souls will voluntarily swear allegiance to Antichrist and “receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads” (Rev. 13:16). Using barcodes is a long way from such a voluntary act of allegiance.

To see this clearly and to avoid making this pledge of allegiance that those who have written me fear they might make unknowingly, please keep these two points in mind:

1. We consist of a body and a soul in unity, which joined aspects of our life will either inherit God’s eternal kingdom or receive eternal damnation. With our souls we have sworn allegiance to Christ during baptism. Did we “Unite ourselves unto Christ”? Yes, we did! Therefore: swear allegiance to no human, no matter what astonishing ‘miracles’ you may witness, or how ‘divine’ he may appear. It is one thing to be governed, ruled, dominated by powerful people of this earth and to suffer because of them, but it is quite another matter ‘to swear allegiance to’ anyone other than Christ our Lord. Avoid any oaths to persons and we will avoid serving Antichrist.

2.  When our bodies were anointed during our Chrismation, we became the temple of the Holy Spirit. We are told that there are introductory programs and plans by the so-called New World Order to place microchips under the skin or barcode type tattoos to be used instead of identification papers or currency ‘to buy and sell.’ If true, this is totally unacceptable.  We must be as vigilant over bodies as of our souls.

In the Old Testament, the time during which God brought up His Chosen People – with us being the “New Israel”, we read: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh…nor print any marks upon you: I am Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28) Church cannons forbid any man who has a tattoo anyplace on his body, to be ordained a priest.  “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price” (I Cor.6:19,20), namely, by the price of the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe that we if we align our souls with Christ and avoid forbidden defilements of our bodies, we will avoid making allegiance to the Antichrist.

These steps, however, are only superficial protection. Our vigilance must consist of devoting more time and effort to prayer in these difficult times in which, as we have noted, even the elect will be tempted. But above all, we must rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit ‘Who is everywhere present and fillest all things’ (Heavenly King prayer) for our salvation. In God alone is our help and protection and in Him rather than notions of barcodes, names, and numbers we must put our trust.
